This tofu yogurt recipe has been my go-to for years now. I initially gave it a shot when I couldn’t find any non-dairy yogurt alternatives that I actually enjoyed – either the taste or the nutrition profile was always lacking. But I knew there had to be a better way.

Enter tofu: one of the most versatile ingredients out there. It’s nutritious, high in protein, affordable, and when transformed into this creamy yogurt, it’s downright delicious. Trust me, once you try it, you’ll never go back to store-bought yogurt again.

Why use tofu for vegan yogurt

When it comes to making dairy-free yogurt, tofu is a top choice for many reasons:

    • When blended, tofu has a smooth and creamy texture that’s impressively similar to traditional yogurt’s consistency.
    • It’s a great plant-based protein source. Protein helps to slow digestion, keeping you feeling satisfied for longer. Having tofu yogurt in the morning is a great way to add plant-based protein to your breakfast.
    • It’s also rich in nutrients such as calcium, iron, and vitamins, which can promote many health benefits and help support overall health.
    • It has a relatively neutral taste, which means it can be combined with a variety of other ingredients without overpowering their flavors.
    • It’s a pretty affordable protein option with a long shelf life if kept unopened in the refrigerator.
A spoon rests inside of a round glass container filled with a creamy and smooth tofu yogurt.

    Why you’ll love this recipe

    • It’s creamy, tangy, and has a flavor that surpasses that of store-bought alternatives. Plus, it has the same consistency as traditional yogurt, so you won’t miss out on taste or texture.
    • It’s incredibly quick and easy to make. You can whip it up in less than five minutes by blending all the ingredients together.
    • It’s made with simple ingredients that are easy to find, so you can make it anytime. It’s also budget-friendly and much cheaper than dairy-free yogurt options available in stores.
    • It’s the perfect high protein vegan yogurt. It packs almost 14 grams of protein per serving without protein powder added!
    • It’s incredibly versatile and can be customized to suit your preferences. Simply add your preferred mix-ins to each serving, and you can even mix in fresh fruits to create your own unique and personalized flavor.
    • It’s a healthy option that’s great for daily consumption. Plus, it’s free from gums, thickeners, oils, and added starch.
    • There’s no fermenting time required. Although I appreciate the process of making cultured yogurt at home, it can be quite a daunting task for many. This recipe is much simpler and perfect for everyday use. You can make it without having to worry about sterilizing equipment, achieving ideal temperatures, or other similar concerns.

    Ingredients you’ll need

    Tofu

Let’s start with the main ingredient of the recipe. To make tofu yogurt, you can use silken, soft, or medium-firm tofu, depending on the desired consistency of your vegan yogurt. The denser the tofu, the thicker the yogurt will be.

    • For a thick Greek-style yogurt consistency, use medium-firm tofu. It’s my go-to choice for this recipe. It always yields a smooth and creamy texture, as you can see in the photos, making the perfect high protein alternative to Greek yogurt. Depending on the brand, firm tofu may also work.
    • For a thinner regular yogurt consistency, use silken or soft tofu, as their water content is higher.

Note: There are many types of tofu available, and the taste can vary depending on the brand. My top tip is to select a tofu brand that you personally enjoy the taste of. Also, fresh tofu is best here as it doesn’t leave a strong tofu-soy flavor. I always go for the Sunrise brand.

    Other ingredients

The other 4 ingredients used in this recipe are:

    • Cashew Butter: Natural cashew butter provides a rich and creamy texture to the yogurt and adds healthy fats. Its also helps masking the mild flavor of tofu without being overpowering.
    • Lemon Juice: Fresh lemon juice adds a tangy flavor and slightly sour taste, similar to traditional yogurt that is made by fermentation. Don’t skip it!
    • Maple Syrup: Maple syrup is my preferred sweetener for this recipe because it’s a liquid sweetener that blends well with the mixture, and it only requires a small amount to add the desired sweetness. Feel free to use another type of sugar if desired.
    • Vanilla Extract: It’s an essential flavor booster in this recipe. Please, don’t skip. It makes a lot of difference in my opinion.

    How to make tofu yogurt

It’s incredibly easy to make this vegan yogurt. You can have it ready to eat in under 5 minutes!

All you need to do is toss all the ingredients into a food processor or blender, and blend until you get a smooth, creamy, and well-combined mixture. Remember to scrape down the sides as needed.

After blending all the ingredients, taste the yogurt and adjust the flavor and texture according to your preference.

Step-by-step images on how to make tofu yogurt: 1) Ingredients in the food processor. 2) Blended ingredients in the food processor.

There you have it, a simple recipe for creamy tofu yogurt that’s both delicious and nutritious!

    Equipment note

I usually use my food processor to make this recipe as it’s convenient and helps achieve a smooth consistency effortlessly.

However, a blender works just as well. I have successfully made this yogurt in my Vitamix and Nutribullet many times. If you don’t have a high-speed blender, a regular blender should work fine. Just make sure to blend thoroughly until the mixture is completely smooth.

Watch how to make this recipe:

Note: In the recipe video, I blended the tofu first and then added the other ingredients, but this was just to demonstrate that tofu can become very creamy without additional ingredients. When making your yogurt, you can add all the ingredients at once.

    Tips & recipe notes

    • Choose the right tofu! As mentioned earlier, the type of tofu you use will affect the consistency and taste of your yogurt.
    • To achieve a smooth and creamy consistency, be sure to blend the ingredients thoroughly. Depending on the type of blender or food processor you use, you may need to stop and scrape down the sides a few times.
    • The consistency of tofu yogurt tends to become firmer as it sits in the refrigerator. If it becomes too thick for your liking, you can always add a liquid such as soy milk or water to adjust its consistency.

    Variations, additions & swaps

While this recipe is delicious in its simplicity, it also lends itself well to a variety of add-ins and customizations. Get creative and experiment with different combinations to find the perfect flavor for you.

    • Easily change the consistency of the yogurt by changing the type of tofu used in the recipe.
    • Enhance the taste of your tofu yogurt by incorporating fresh or frozen fruits of your choice! Blueberries and peaches are my favorites, but feel free to experiment with any fruit you like. You can also mix and match different fruits for a unique flavor combination. I recommend using a 1/2 cup of fruit per cup of tofu yogurt.
    • In case you don’t have cashew butter, you can substitute it with other nut or seed butters like almond butter, peanut butter, or sunflower seed butter, to achieve a similar texture in the yogurt. However, it’s important to note that using a different nut or seed butter will change the flavor profile, as each type of butter has a distinct taste.
    • You can also substitute raw soaked cashews instead of cashew butter in this recipe. For this, you can use about 1/3 cup of cashews.
    • To add probiotics to your tofu yogurt, you can mix in some probiotic powder or capsules. Simply empty the capsule into your blender or food processor, making sure to discard the outer shell. Look for a high-quality probiotic supplement with a variety of strains and follow the recommended dosage.

Please note that adding ingredients like fruits can reduce the shelf life of the tofu yogurt.

    Serving suggestions

    • Create a delicious yogurt bowl by adding toppings like fresh fruit, granola, nuts, or seeds to your tofu yogurt. To give you an idea, I enjoy topping my tofu yogurt with sliced bananas, peanut butter granola, and cacao nibs to add texture and flavor.
    • Make a parfait by layering your tofu yogurt with fresh fruit and granola in a glass or jar. You can also try it with some tasty strawberry chia jam for an extra burst of flavor and nutrition.
    • Use the tofu yogurt as a smoothie base by blending it with your preferred fruits and veggies. For inspiration, check out this chocolate tofu smoothie recipe.
    • Enjoy it alongside baked oatmeal, quick breads, muffins, pancakes, and waffles.
    • Use it as a base for overnight oats, muesli, or your favorite porridge.

    Storage tips

To ensure freshness, store your tofu yogurt in an airtight container in the refrigerator up to 5 days. Avoid freezing it, as this can significantly alter its texture.

Similar to other types of yogurt, a small amount of separation may occur during storage, resulting in a slight separation of water. All you have to do is give it a quick stir before serving.

    FAQs

    Can you eat tofu raw?

Tofu in its packaging is already cooked and not a raw food. It is safe to consume straight from the package. You don’t need to cook it before making this yogurt recipe — simply add it to your food processor or blender and you’re good to go!

Is it OK to eat tofu every day?

Yes, it is generally safe to eat tofu every day as part of a balanced diet. Tofu is a good source of protein, iron, and calcium, and it is low in calories and fat. However, it’s essential to consume a diverse range of other healthy foods to ensure a well-rounded and complete diet.

Is vegan yogurt a good source of protein?

It depends. Not all vegan yogurts are created equal, and the protein content can vary depending on the brand and ingredients used. However, this homemade tofu yogurt recipe is a great source of protein since it is made from tofu, which is derived from soy that is naturally rich in protein. In fact, soy-based dairy alternatives tend to have the most protein when compared to other plant-based options.
